The Hammond Post Office & Court House
is located on State Street in downtown Hammond.
Thousands of young men went here to sign up for the military draft. It
was Hammond's connection to the outside world. Love letters, job applications,
utility bills, magazines (and post cards like this one), letters to distant
relatives, all entered and passed through this building.
When I was a college student home for Christmas holidays, I worked as a Christmas carrier for the Hammond Post Office. Frazier Andrews, a pleasant gentleman and active member of the First Christian Church (where I attended), was our Postmaster. After two winters carrying mail in the freezing cold, Frazier got me a job as a mail clerk. I sorted mail in this wonderful building during the Christmas season. Good memories and a warm job! Who could ask for more?
