Hammond Public Library
Every kid had trouble finding this building! It was located across of the tracks, north of the downtown business district on Hohman Avenue. The resources were limited but were always sought out by desperate HHS students needing citations for that impressive, end-of-the-semester term paper. Some struggling academics often thought there was a conspiracy to keep the masses from knowing about this place, thus avoiding a real rush on the single-copy texts needed to assure a passing grade.
This was the Mecca for those senior level students wanting to graduate from HHS. With limited seating, students often had to sit on the inside stairwell steps to copy text by hand into our Red Indian Spiral Bound notebooks. (This was before Xerox machines, computers and the Internet).
Fortunately the City Fathers realized the importance of such a resource for the community and relocated the facility to State Street where it is much more accessible.
